Este libro recorre diacrónicamente la trayectoria política de Melquíades Álvarez González-Posada (1864-1936). A través de ella se analiza una época, desde el final del siglo XIX, en la que nuestro protagonista irrumpe con gran fuerza en la escena política, primero asturiana y luego nacional, hasta el comienzo de la Guerra Civil, trance en el que sería vilmente asesinado. Orador excepcional, su destreza verbal, su expresividad, gestualidad y capacidad para la improvisación y la réplica significaron algunas de las características más reseñables de su actividad pública. Hombre de convicciones y principios, hoy se nos muestra como una figura histórica de primer orden, protagonista de un tiempo en el que algunos, entre ellos él, propugnaron el tránsito pacífico desde un modelo liberal agotado a una democracia plena de derechos y libertades. Sin embargo, en el tiempo histórico analizado, la España democrática ideada por Melquíades Álvarez no pudo ser.
